Hoosiers get off to great start in victory

Sunday, February 3, 2013 - 2:45 am

Indiana knocked off top-ranked Michigan in front of a sold-out Assembly Hall crowd, as well as a national television audience.

Here are five keys to the Hoosier victory:

1) Make the shot:

IU opened 6-for-6 from the field and finished 26-for-50 (52 percent). That offset their 16 turnovers Michigan converted into 21 points.

2) Get to the line:

Nobody draws fouls better than Indiana. It was 22-for-25 from the line to Michigan's 6-for-7. The Wolverines had 19 fouls, eight above their average.

3) Withstanding runs:

IU built an early 15-point lead. Michigan rallied to tie. The Hoosiers responded with an 11-0 run. The Wolverines surged to within a basket before IU pulled ahead for good.

4) Fast pace:

IU likes to run. So does Michigan, but no team can out-run the Hoosiers in Assembly Hall. Yes, the Wolverines had 17 fast-break points to IU's 13, but that's misleading. IU dictated the pace and earned the win.

5) Hitting the glass:

The Hoosiers had a 38-29 rebounding edge. They had eight offensive rebounds and 14 second-chance points. In a physical game, you'd better believe that was big.
