Golfers will poke their heads out for the second annual Groundhog Open mini-golfing tournament Thursday.

The Groundhog Open is a fundraiser for the Fort Wayne/Allen County Economic Development Alliance and the Downtown Improvement District to help improve parts of downtown. Last year they raised $17,000.

The Groundhog Open has been coordinated by a team of downtown volunteers including representatives of the Fort Wayne-Allen County Economic Development Alliance, Asher Agency, Design Collaborative, Embassy Theatre, Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation, Grand Wayne Convention Center, and the Hilton and the Marriott.

Each of the course's 18 holes is designed based on what company or organization is sponsoring it. There will be a competition among sponsors for the best putting green design. The winner will be decided based on ballots cast by each golfer. The putting course will be laid out inside the Grand Wayne Convention Center, the Embassy Theatre/Indiana Hotel, the Hilton Hotel, and the Courtyard by Marriott, across the skywalks that link the buildings.

Eighteen teams of four will compete during each round, with the two best scores reported for each team. There will be four rounds of golf: at 8:30 and 11 a.m. and 1:30 and 4 p.m.

As of mid-Tuesday, the tournament had five open spots for the 8:30 a.m. tee off.

Among those registered is a team formed by Mayor Tom Henry and one composed of county commission members.

Major sponsors for the event are Lutheran Health Network and Fort Wayne Newspapers/Indiana Golf Show.
