Cornerback one of 23 players to sign with Boilers

Wednesday, February 6, 2013 - 4:47 pm

It's official -- TyVel Jemison is about to become a Purdue Boilermaker.

The Bishop Luers cornerback standout was one of 22 players to sign with Purdue today as part of new coach Darrell Hazell's Class of 2013.

The 5-11, 175-pound Jemison was rated as the No. 10 player in the state of Indiana and the No. 52 cornerback nationally by Rivals.com, a national Internet recruiting service.

Last season he had five interceptions and 81 tackles for Luers' state title team. He had 67 tackles, eight tackles for loss and forced three fumbles as a junior. He played on four state title teams for Luers.

Purdue's highest rated recruit is quarterback Danny Etling, the former Terre Haute South standout who has already enrolled in school and will participate in spring practice.

He's rated as the nation's No. 9 pro-style quarterback by Rivals.com. ESPN.com lists him as the No. 12 pro-style quarterback. MaxSports.com's Tom Lemming rates him as the No. 20 pro-style quarterback. He played in the recent All-America Bowl Game in Houston. He threw for 1,505 yards and 11 touchdowns last season for Terre Haute South

Two other players have already enrolled -- defensive end John Strauser and running back David Yancey.

Purdue recruits come from seven states – five each from Georgia, Ohio and Florida; three from Indiana and Illinois; and one each from Texas and Kentucky.

The Boilers signed four running backs and four defensive ends. Thirteen of the players were on defense.

Rivals.com rates this class as No. 54 nationally and No. 12 in the Big Ten.
