He'll help the program when he can during the NFL offseason

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Chandler Harnish has officially joined the Norwell High School coaching staff.Harnish was approved as a volunteer varsity assistant coach at the Northern Wells Community School Board meeting on Tuesday.

Harnish, entering his second year with the Colts, graduated from Norwell in 2007 and led the team to a Class 3A state runnerup finish as a senior.

Norwell coach Jeff Miller said the move allows Harnish to assist whenever he can at the school. Harnish helped out occasionally last summer, Miller said.

“Our kids look up to him,” Miller said. “Anytime he can come out to practice, he's welcome. He'll be around here in the summer when he can.”

Not many programs can point to a pro football player as an example and source of motivation for their current squads.

“We've been struggling a little bit lately, but we ended on a good note last year and I think him being around gives the kids someone to look up to,” Miller said. “Chandler was in that weight room not too many years ago like those kids now. If you work hard, you never know.”
