Local Catholic high schools Bishop Dwenger and Bishop Luers will close Friday because of the funeral at noon that day of Bishop Emeritus John M. D'Arcy of the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.
So many teachers and families wanted to attend the funeral that there were not enough substitute teachers available to keep Dwenger and Luers open, a note emailed Wednesday to Dwenger parents said.
D'Arcy served as bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend for nearly 25 years before retiring in early 2010. He died Sunday after suffering from cancer.
