Cadet defense of Angola star proved vital

Sunday, February 10, 2013 - 12:32 am

Concordia Lutheran girl's basketball coach David Miller spoke with The News-Sentinel following his team's win over Angola in the IHSAA Class 3A Sectional championship game on Saturday.

On the balance of young players and veterans:

We have two kids in (Courtney Smith and Olivia Hahn) that started for us last year, so that makes a big difference, pulling the young ones along with them. Some of those kids were on the team too and played some.

On the steady improvement of the last few weeks:

We coaches talked about that at our shoot-around and walk-through (Saturday) and said, ‘My Goodness we are getting better.’ We have some kids that are maturing a little bit because we are really young.

On Courtney Smith defending Rachel Rinehart:

We were worried about her expending so much energy on Rachel and also worried about her getting in foul trouble. She is so important to us and we have to have her on the floor and I thought she did a tremendous job on Rachel.

On coming together as a team throughout the season:

It was hard work, I will tell you that. We lost such great leaders and we lost a lot of size and great kids. It took us awhile to look for that leadership and get some from the kids so (the coaches) didn’t have to do it all. They are coming of age and I’m really proud of them.
