A Mentone man was arrested on multiple charges Saturday night after a short foot pursuit near Palestine Lake.
Kosciusko County Sheriff's deputies, along with Claypool officers, went to Palestine Lake on Saturday evening to try to serve two active warrants on Matthew Dillan Mahaska, 20, of Mentone. Officers found Mahaska walking along County Road 600 West near Blue Jay Drive at approximately 7:02 p.m., then detained and handcuffed Mahaska. Deputies said they found several stolen items in his possession.
Deputies report that after Mahaska was handcuffed, he turned and ran back toward homes near Palestine Lake. Officers chased Mahaska until apprehending him a short distance from their squad cars. Officers were originally serving active warrants on Mahaska for felony theft as well as felony failure to appear but have added preliminary charges of resisting/fleeing law enforcement and possession of paraphernalia. Mahaska is now in the Kosciusko County Jail with bond set at $17,500.
Kosciusko County Sheriff's detectives also said Mahaska's arrest Saturday night has provided information on his involvement with a burglary in the Burket area in recent weeks. Detectives said more charges are possible for that incident.
