Were here for D’Arcy funeral.

The blizzard that smacked New England states Friday brought unexpected visitors Sunday at St. Jude Catholic Church at State Boulevard and Randallia Drive.

The storm, which closed roads and airports, canceled hundreds of airline flights in the Northeast.

That left Auxiliary Bishop John Dooher and Auxiliary Bishop Peter Uglietto, both of Boston, stuck in Fort Wayne after traveling here last week for the funeral Mass on Friday of Bishop Emeritus John M. D'Arcy of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.

D'Arcy, a Boston native, suffered from cancer and died Feb. 3.

Dooher celebrated the 11 a.m. Mass on Sunday at St. Jude, while Uglietto, who felt ill, stayed in the back of the church.

Uglietto had stayed in a suite at the church office at St. Jude since arriving Wednesday for D’Arcy funeral events, a parish staff member said. Dooher came to St. Jude on Sunday morning to ride with Uglietto to Fort Wayne International Airport to travel home.

Airports, including Logan International in Boston, had reopened by Saturday night.

A diocesan staff member picked them right after Mass on Sunday and drove them from St. Jude church to the airport.
