Lack of perimeter defense could pose problem

Tuesday, February 19, 2013 - 2:38 am

Top-ranked Indiana will visit fourth-ranked Michigan State tonight. Here are some signs of trouble for the Hoosiers if they occur.

1. The Hoosiers can't contain Keith Appling. The Spartan point guard runs the offensive show. Foul trouble limited him last month in Assembly Hall, and IU still only won by five points. Slowing him down means slowing down the Michigan State fast break. If he takes charge, look out.

2. IU rushes shots and, in the end, misses them. To win on the road you have to shoot well. It sounds simple. It is not. If the Hoosiers can get inside scoring, that will open up the perimeter. If they can't and have to rely on jump shots, it could be a long night.

3. Cody Zeller is not the best post player on the court. Yes, IU will likely put him on the perimeter some, but his inside presence is crucial to open things up for the rest of his teammates. If he thrives, the Hoosiers win. It really is that simple.
