Marian controls Saint Francis star, but not others

Balanced team effort propels Cougars to tourney win

Wednesday, February 20, 2013 - 2:38 am

Saint Francis junior Jenelle Wilson scored 20 points and Meghan Slusher produced a double-double to lead the fourth-ranked Cougars to an 84-58 win over Marian University in the first round of the Crossroads League Women's basketball Tournament on Tuesday.

The second-seeded Cougars (28-3) will host No. 13 Bethel (25-6) on Friday at the Hutzell Athletic Center at 7 p.m.

After scoring 34 points in a recent Saint Francis win at Marian, the Knights limited Cougar senior guard Kayla Drake to just eight points.

Saint Francis' second-leading scorer, Skylarr Shurn, sat out Tuesday's game after suffereing a concussion on Saturday.

Cougar freshman Mallory Hester added a season-best 12 points, while former Bishop Luers High School standout Brooke Ridley added 11 points.

Kalah Baer scored 10 in just her fourth start of the season. She scored the first two buckets of the game and after Marian cut the deficit to 4-2, the Cougars shot out to a 25-11 lead.

The hosts eventually led 50-22 at halftime and cruised to their third win of the season over the Knights by double digits.
