Eagles go zone to control Cadet drives

Saturday, February 23, 2013 - 1:40 am

Columbia City earned an impressive boy's basketball win over Concordia Lutheran on Friday. Eagle coach Chris Benedict spoke with The News-Sentinel following the victory.

On the game preparing them for sectionals:

“It's just a tournament type atmosphere here. Concordia's got a great team, very well-coached, two teams battling hard — tough for someone to lose this game. Just happy for our kids, they really gutted it out.”

On the zone defense:

“DJ (McCall) and Marq Rogers can get to the basket so well on the perimeter, Gross is a really great penetrator as well, so we just wanted to try and keep the ball out of the paint as best as we could. Once that gets in there, that frees up their offensive rebounders if your back guy has to help. Kind of wanted to make them shoot perimeter jumpers. Obviously, we needed to get to the one kid (Harris) a little quicker than we did.”

On creating easy layups with backdoor cuts and screens:

“Once we got the lead, then they're trying to come after it a little bit harder than they normally are. Knew they were going to faceguard Drew (Benedict) and he was going to have to curl and back cut through the lane. Derek (Hinen) is just very good when you put that much pressure on the perimeter. Derek's pretty good at taking the ball and getting to the rim. Once that happens, he makes some dump down passes and we're able to score. One of those things you just have to take what they give you.”

On the late-game free throw troubles:

“Obviously, we need to hit free throws better than we did. Glad Derek (Hinen) hit that last one there to kind of secure it because I knew they didn't have any timeouts left.”

On Concordia Lutheran’s Austin Harris 21-point night:

“Harris went kind of crazy from the 3-point line; hit a bunch of threes. Going to give up some shots in that defense but hopefully we can rebound a little quicker, get out to shooters a little better.”
