Storm could hit Fort Wayne with quarter-inch of ice

Monday, February 25, 2013 - 3:48 pm

A possible winter storm expected to hit Fort Wayne by Tuesday morning could cover roads – including Interstate 69 – with a quarter-inch-thick layer of ice.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch Monday morning that will last from Tuesday morning through that evening.

The storm system was developing over the southern Plains states Monday. It could bring freezing rain and sleet, forming up to a quarter-inch of ice along I-69 and east of the interstate, the weather service said. Ice accumulation on trees and power lines could cause power outages, it said.

The weather service predicted accumulation of 2-3 inches of snow and sleet through Tuesday night for most of Fort Wayne, while areas west of I-69 could get 3-7 inches.

Temperatures will hover near the freezing mark, bringing the threat of ice.
