Coroner releases identity of man killed in I-69 crash Sunday

Monday, February 25, 2013 - 10:44 am

Authorities have released the identity of a man killed in a crash on Interstate 69 near the Goshen Road exit on Sunday.

Christopher Grady Frey, 33, of Fort Wayne, was pronounced dead at the scene early Sunday, the Allen County Coroner's Office said Monday morning.

The coroner's office reported that he died from blunt-force trauma and was not wearing a seat belt. Frey is the fifth person to die in traffic accidents so far this year in Fort Wayne and Allen County.

Fort Wayne Police said the man's Chevrolet SUV struck the rear of a black bus and then hit the center barrier wall of northbound I-69 close to the Goshen Road exit at 3:31 a.m., according to Officer Chris Felton, spokesman for the Fort Wayne Police Department. A red pickup traveling northbound approached the accident scene, but the driver lost control of the vehicle, which spun around, striking the rear of the SUV before coming to a stop. The pickup's driver reported no injuries.

Police were searching for the bus soon after the crash and the driver might not have known it had been struck, Felton reported earlier. Police found the bus in the 9800 block of Coldwater Road and investigators questioned the driver and any possible occupants.

The case remained under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, the coroner's office and the Allen County prosecutor's office.
