It used to be the girls high school gymnastics sectional was always held the first weekend in March, but this year the schedule is changing.
The Concordia Lutheran Sectional will be held Thursday night. That's mostly because of a lack of enough judges to cover the state Saturday, but it also gives the girls a night to be in the spotlight. Instead of being one of many events, including girls and boys basketball games, the gymnasts will have a chance to put on a show by themselves.
Bishop Dwenger, Carroll, Concordia, Northrop, Snider, South Side, Wayne, Heritage and Homestead will try to earn one of top three team spots and a chance to compete in next week's Huntington North Regional. The sectional starts at 5:30 p.m., and admission costs $6.
Defending state champion and No. 2-ranked Bishop Dwenger is the heavy favorite to win the meet. The Saints have won five sectionals in a row and 11 of the last 12.
Carroll is ranked No. 14 in the state coaches poll. The Chargers and Saints met two weeks ago with Bishop Dwenger posting a season-high 111.775 score and Carroll a season-high 105.7. Bishop Dwenger came back last week to post a 109.9 against Northrop, so the Saints are peaking at the right time.
Bishop Dwenger has the best depth in the area with stars such as senior Kaitlyn Coffee, junior Katy Linvill and freshman Maria Trahin. Other top Saints include freshman Grace Gillig, sophomores Andrea Nix and Alexis Eddy, and juniors Alena Chilian and Cecelia Sordelet.
Carroll is led by senior Megan Felger and junior Morgan Moehle. Other top Chargers are senior Carrie Ferguson and sophomores Sydney Ulrey and Kendall Isenbarger.
Other top individuals in the sectional include Northrop seniors Natalie Sliger and Cassie Neilands.
