Woman charged with 4 felonies in Roanoke fatal overdose

Thursday, February 28, 2013 - 5:02 pm

A Huntington County woman faces four felony charges related to the drug-overdose death of a woman in Roanoke last year.

Christy Oden, 40, who lives southeast of Huntington, has been charged with three counts of dealing in a Schedule II controlled substance, a Class B felony, and one count of reckless homicide, a Class C felony. The arrest came after a three-month investigation into the death of Annette Veach, 39, of Roanoke.

The investigation began at around 1 p.m. Nov. 25, when Huntington County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a home in Roanoke. Emergency medical technicians got there ahead of deputies and found Veach's body in a home. She was dead.

Over the next several weeks, officers interviewed two other men and Oden, all of whom were with Veach in the Roanoke home the night before she died, as well as people who had been with the women in a tavern very early Nov. 25. Witnesses told police that Oden and Veach met two other men at the home in Roanoke they shared and, while there, Oden ground up several pills, according to the probable-cause document. Veach snorted some of the mixture of ground pills, according to witness accounts.

The men who share the home told investigators they found Veach lying on the floor dead when they woke up at around noon. An autopsy found that she died of “morphine toxicity,” according to the Huntington County Prosecutor's Office.

Although Oden is charged with dealing in a controlled substance, the supporting documents do not allege that Oden sold Veach the pills. Instead, the charges say that she “delivered” the drugs to her. Each of the three counts of dealing pertain to a different drug that Oden allegedly provided to the woman before she died: oxymorphine, oxycodone and morphine.

Bond for Oden has been set at $70,000, and her initial hearing in Huntington Superior Court is scheduled for Friday.
