A Fort Wayne girl who fell through ice on a frozen pond is expected to recover after her brother and father came to her rescue.
At about 12:53 p.m. Saturday 8-year-old Samantha Buuck was walking on a frozen pond behind her residence in the 16000 block of Tonkel Road when she fell through the ice, according to a Department of Natural Resources news release. She called for help and struggled to stay afloat. Her brother, Anthony, 12, was outside and nearby and heard her. He jumped into the icy water and tried to rescue her. Anthony was able to get to Samantha and began calling for help. Their father, Dale Buuck, heard Anthony’s calls from inside their residence and came to their aid. Dale entered the icy water and was able to push Anthony and Samantha into shallower water, where Anthony was able to get himself and Samantha out of the water. Once on shore, Anthony began CPR on his sister. Dale was able to get out of the water and took over CPR on Samantha while Anthony went inside and called 911.
It was estimated that Samantha was underwater for 2 minutes. She was taken to Parkview Hospital in critical condition. Paramedics were able to restore her breathing and she is expected to recover, according to the news release. Anthony and Dale were also taken to Parkview for treatment of hypothermia and cold-related injuries.
Conservation officers were assisted by Cedar Creek Fire and the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority.
