An 18-year-old rural Wells County man is in critical condition after being shot in the head Saturday afternoon while cleaning handguns with his 19-year-old friend, according to Indiana State Police.
According to ISP Detective Kent Havens, at around 1:15 p.m., the victim and his friend were at a residence in the 3200 block of West County Road 600 N, just outside of Markle. The two were cleaning handguns when one weapon accidentally discharged. A .45-caliber bullet from the handgun that the friend was handling struck the victim in the head.
The victim was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital where he was undergoing emergency surgery early Saturday evening.
Police were withholding the teens' identities.
No arrests have been made and while this appears to be an accidental shooting, an investigation is under way, according to State Police. Detective Diane Betz with the Wells County Sheriff Department and Indiana State Police Crime Scene Technician Sergeant John Petro are assisting Havens with this investigation.
