The IPFW men's volleyball team dropped its third consecutive match on Saturday, but coach Arnie Ball wasn't on the court to see it.
Ball received a red card and was ejected from the match late in the fourth game as IPFW lost to Grand Canyon 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-19 on Saturday in Phoenix, Ariz.
With IPFW leading 17-15 in fourth game, Ball received a yellow card for arguing with the officials following an ace from Grand Canyon outside attacker Ben Ponnet. The Hall of Fame coach then received the red card and an automatic ejection for arguing.
The Antelopes (12-7, 5-3 MIVA) after Ball's ejection went on a 8-2 run to beat the Mastodons and complete the two-match weekend series sweep.
This is the first time in recent history that Ball was ejected from a match. Ball was also ejected from a conference match against in-state rival Ball State in February 2007.
Despite Ball's ejection, freshman outside attacker Andy Sellan in the loss had a season-high 20 kills. In addition, IPFW freshman libero Luis Bertran had a team-high 13 digs.
IPFW (6-7, 3-5 MIVA) with this loss moves into a tie for fifth place in the MIVA with Ball State. The Mastodons also concluded their season-long six-match road trip going 2-4.
IPFW will return home as it plays Sacred Heart at 7 p.m. Friday before playing No. 9 Penn State at 7 p.m. Saturday.
