I am concerned about the violence around our country that occurs when drug-related gangs, some mentally ill people and radical Muslims obtain and use guns. Most of these attacks have been in gun-free zones – a military mess hall, a movie theater, a mall and numerous schools.
However, more terrifying is the nation in which only the criminal and the government have guns. Tyranny follows disarmament of the people.
In the time of Gideon after the Israelites were disarmed, their conquerors the Midianites freely helped themselves to whatever they wanted. Thus, Gideon threshed wheat in hiding so that they would have food. When Saul was made the king of Israel, the Philistines disarmed Israel again. Indeed, the Israelites came up with two swords, one for Saul, the other for his chief general and son, Jonathan. (I Samuel 13:19-22)
Following World War I, violence and unrest filled Weimar Germany, so the government responded with increasingly stringent gun control policies. Possession of a gun became a capital offense for all except the approved. When Hitler and the Nazis came to power, most of the populace was already powerless. Hitler completed the disarmament by labeling any opponent of the Nazis a Communist and confiscating what had been legally owned weapons.
Almost 21 million Germans were murdered by the Nazis. Of those murdered, 4.6 million fit only into the category of political prisoner, someone deemed to disagree with the Nazi Agenda.
In pre-Civil War America, gun control targeted both free and slave African-Americans. Whites feared that free blacks set a bad example for slaves and would help slaves escape or rebel. Thus, they kept the African-American community “in its place” with gun control. The Ku Klux Klan and others took full advantage of these restrictions. Between 1882 and 1968, there were 3,446 black people lynched.
In Ottoman Turkey, following the passage of gun control laws in 1915, 1-15 million Armenians (mostly Christians) were murdered by the government. After the Soviet Union passed gun control in stages from 1918-1926, the Communists murdered 20 million political opponents and people in farming communities. From 1927-1976 Nationalist and Communist China disarmed their people and murdered 45 million of their citizens. In Cambodia, the Communist government murdered 2 million political enemies and educated people from 1975-79. From 1960-1981 the Guatemalan government massacred 100,000-200,000 Mayans, other Indians and political enemies. Uganda killed Christians and political enemies. Rwanda slaughtered the Tutsis. All followed gun control.
It couldn’t happen here? “We’re Americans. We’re exceptions.”
Gun control has been effective, but for whom? If gun control is effective in protecting the average citizen from gun violence, then Washington, D.C., New York City, and Chicago must be the safest cities in our nation. Check the statistics.
