Foster Park neighborhood’s request for National Register listing moves to state level

Saturday, March 9, 2013 - 12:01 am

The Foster Park neighborhood's application for listing on the National Register of Historic Places has moved on to the State of Indiana for consideration.

At a public hearing Feb. 25, the City of Fort Wayne's Historic Preservation Commission agreed the Foster Park neighborhood, which is located just north of Foster Park, meets criteria for lisiting on the National Register, said Creager Smith, a city historic preservation planner.

The city commission directed the city historic preservation staff to forward Foster Park's National Register application and the staff's report on it to the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, Smith said.

If the state's Historic Preservation Review Board approves, the application will be forwarded to the National Park Service for a final decision, which likely won't come until November or later, Smith said.

Homes in the Foster Park neighborhood date to as early as the 1920s and as recently as the 1970s, application information says. Construction was interrupted by both the Great Depression and World War II.

Home styles vary from older Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, American Foursquare and Craftsman to more modern Ranch, International and Minimal Traditional styles, city historic preservation staff said in their review of the application.

City historic presevation staff found the 137-home neighborhood meets two criteria for listing on the National Register:

•It is associated with the planning and development of early suburban subdivisions in Fort Wayne in accordance with the Fort Wayne parks and boulevard system.

•Homes in the neighborhood exemplify the distinctive characteristics of homes built between 1926 and 1963.
