The first shall be last and the last shall be first, or vice versa. Either way it can mean the same.
In the days of Jesus, vocabulary was more limited. Thus, words could have more varied meanings. First and last could be one person; first at birth and last at death and plethora of times between. It takes no fantastic spiritual belief to see such is fundamentally true.
Since God created all matter of creation from within himself at the beginning, all matter was present from the beginning, will be present in some form unto the end of time. Since all creation is from within God, everything derived from creation, original or reformulated, is a part of God.
Thus, Jesus and everyone else can claim to have existed in some form since the beginning; will continue to exist in some form until the end of time. Everything in some form is part of God. Jesus was no more or less part of God than anyone else.
