We wanted to take this opportunity to publicly thank all the people of South Bend and Fort Wayne for the outpouring of kindness we received when we visited Northern Indiana recently for the funeral of our uncle Bishop John D’Arcy. It was wonderful to hear the stories from so many people, Catholic and non-Catholic, young and old, and from all backgrounds, that described our uncle as a spiritual leader, beloved pastor, and bridge builder. These stories gave us a new perspective on the man we knew from growing up as someone who taught us how to throw a baseball or took us on trips to Red Sox games or to the circus. It is clear from the stories we heard that Bishop D’Arcy was just as good-humored and unpretentious in his role as bishop as he was in his role as uncle.

We knew how much the communities he served in meant to him. He was so happy that he was able to die at home in Indiana. We are glad that he will be remembered there with affection.
