Letter to the editor: Sequester is Obama's contrived crisis

Wednesday, March 20, 2013 - 12:01 am

It just never ends. This melodrama that is supposed to be our elected officials conducting the people’s business is tiresome.

The latest contrived crisis designed to scare the low-information voters and make the Republicans look bad is the sequester debacle. Want some facts? The sequester was the current administration’s idea, and President Obama said he’d veto any attempt to stop it. Then, when it was about to go into effect, he toured the country preaching doom and gloom, predicting the world would stop revolving if the Republicans wouldn’t agree to more tax increases than they already had.

Yes, it was a meat cleaver approach and designed to be stupid, but we’re being lied to about the whole process. When they talk about cuts, they’re not actually cutting spending, but only reducing the amount of this year’s automatic budget increase. The U.S. will spend more in 2013 than it did in 2012, after the sequester.

So you tell me why any programs or services are being cut when more money is being spent? They only want to scare you. It’s estimated that the U.S. government will take in a record amount of taxes this year; an all-time high! And we’re told the problem is not enough tax revenue? The top 20 percent of income earners are projected to pay 73 percent of all taxes, the middle 30 some percent about 27 percent of all taxes, while the infamous 47 percent will still be paying nothing, or less. What’s that about everyone paying their fair share?

On top of that, the Democrat-controlled U.S. Senate has not passed a budget in over four years, one of the few things they are actually charged with and paid to do.

What we have is a spending problem, in spite of what President Obama told the Speaker of the House, Boehner, but we’re still not doing anything serious to solve the long-term problem. Running around saying the world is going to end if we reduce the increase in spending is not doing us or our country any favors when we have a very real long term financial crisis that is in fact a threat to the very survival of our nation.
