In his words: Komets coach Al Sims

Thursday, March 21, 2013 - 12:01 am

The Komets lost to the Reading Royals 8-2 on Wednesday night, falling behind 6-0 in the first period. The Royals scored two goals in 12 seconds following by another pair in 42 seconds.

There was nothing much Komets coach Al Sims or his team could do.

What do you say about tonight?

Nine shots, six goals I think it was in the first period. Obviously the first goal was unbelievable, to put it mildly. Everything they shot went in. We had some chances at their net, but couldn't get anything home until the third period. Unfortunately, the game got out of hand.

Do you blame the goaltending?

They put the puck where he wasn't. They are a very good team, they have 90 points and you can see why. They have very skilled forwards and a fast, quick defense that can move the puck, and their goaltender I thought played well. Whether it's 2-1 or 8-2, it really doesn't matter because we needed to win the game and we didn't.

What did you say to the guys between the first and second periods?

You just try to motivate them and get them going. We were down 6-0, and for a team that doesn't score much, that was a tall task. We wanted to come into the third period and get something positive out of the game. We wanted to win the third period, and we got that done and hopefully we can carry that into Friday.

What's the mindset now going the rest of the way?

We have to try to win every game. That's all we can do. We're 10 points out, and Toledo won and we have five games left.

What can you tell us about Mathieu Gagnon?

I thought he played pretty well. He tried to get a guy to engage with him in a fight but the guy wouldn't fight him, obviously. The game was out of hand. He's a tough kid, and I thought he skates pretty well and has good size and hits pretty hard. For his first game at this level I thought he did pretty well.

You knew Reading was good coming in, but did you think they were this good?

They got some breaks. We didn't get any breaks, and like I said, a lot of their shots were seeing eye shots that found the top corner. It was a tough night for our goaltenders, that's for sure.

We've seen years when things bounced the Komets way, and this year it seems like nothing does.

It's been tough. A lot of posts and crossbars this year for sure. We've had trouble around the net all year offensively, and defensively I didn't think we were up to snuff from that point of view. It's been a rough year.
