The Fort Wayne Komets fought back to earn a point with a late third-period goal Saturday night in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Elmira Jackals.
Matt Syroczynski scored a power-play goal off a Thomas Beauregard assist with 2:55 remaining Saturday night to back up Charlie Effinger's 40-save performance. Effinger even had to stop a penalty shot by Elmira's Brandon Blandina in the overtime.
During the shootout, Matt Carter and Eric Delong scored for the Jackals, while Jamie Milam was the only Komet who was able to score.
The Komets were out-shot 41-30 in the game, including 24-12 in the first two periods.
It's possible defenseman Ryan Hegarty may be facing some extra discipline from the ECHL as well. Referee Marc-Andre Lavoie called Hegarty for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty with 8:44 remaining in the third period for disputing a decision from the bench. Then he called Hegarty for a game misconduct for physical abuse of official.
The Komets come home to face Toledo on Wednesday before playing their final road game Friday at Kalamazoo. Their final regular-season game will be played Saturday at home against Kalamazoo.
