IPFW volleyball breaks Ohio State jinx, beats No. 8 Buckeyes

Sunday, March 24, 2013 - 12:01 am

For the first time in six years, the coach Arnie Ball and his IPFW men's volleyball team knocked off No. 8 Ohio State.

IPFW rallied from a one-game deficit to upset Ohio State in conference play 28-26, 17-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-9 on Saturday at the Gates Center.

This victory snapped IPFW's 11-match losing streak against Ohio State. The Mastodons (10-9, 4-6 MIVA) last defeated the Buckeyes in the 2007 MIVA Tournament championship match to advance to the four-team NCAA Tournament -- the program's last appearance in the Final Four.

Outside attackers Eddie Rivera and Andy Sellan each had a match-high 15 kills in the victory. In addition, outside attacker Anthony Randolph added 10 kills against the second-place Ohio State (15-5, 7-3 MIVA)

The Buckeyes out-hit the Mastodons .273 to .240, but IPFW held Ohio State to a match-low zero attack percentage in the decisive fifth game.

Freshman libero Luis Bertran led IPFW on defense with 10 digs, while middle attacker Rob Samp had a team-high seven blocks.

Ohio State in the loss had four players finish with double-digit kills, including outside attacker Michael Henchy who had 15 kills.

With this victory, IPFW has now defeated three nationally ranked teams in the last two weeks.

The Mastodons also move back into sixth place in the MIVA with four conference matches remaining in the regular season. IPFW had dropped to seventh place following a loss to in-state rival Ball State on Thursday.
