New Tech program coming to Towles Intermediate's 7th, 8th gradeIn an attempt to strengthen a few schools within its district, Fort Wayne Community Schools will make some changes, including a significant one at Towles Intermediate School. Towles, currently a Montessori school for grades 1 through 8 and part of the feeder system into South Side High School, will instead feature a New Tech model for grades 7 and 8, with those students feeding into the New Tech program at Wayne High School. Towles will still be a Montessori program for grades 1 through 6. READ MORE

Chamber-economic alliance merger in final stage?

It’s taken longer than expected, but the merger of at least two of Fort Wayne’s economic development organizations could be announced as soon as next month. Members of the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce will meet April 9 to consider changes to the articles of incorporation that would apparently combine the chamber with the Fort Wayne-Allen County Economic Development Alliance. The new organization would be called the Greater Fort Wayne Metro Chamber Alliance Inc. READ MORE

IPFW chancellor, others explain budget cuts and layoffs

A decline in enrollment, decreased educational funding, unfunded mandates and the need to create a framework for a sustainable budget for the long term were the reasons given for why IPFW is laying off more than a dozen employees and leaving numerous other positions unfilled. During a series of meetings Wednesday on campus, Chancellor Vicky Carwein, Vice Chancellor for Financial Affairs Walt Branson and other senior personnel explained how the university addressed a deficit of more than $8 million. Video: Easter baskets for area kids

Donations of 1,500 colorful baskets filled with candy, toys and good wishes were delivered by area colleges Wednesday for children served by SCAN. The baskets of books, stuffed animals and candy are given to children in SCAN's home-based prevention programs and to youngsters who come to SCAN each week for supervised visits with their parents in the Family Restoration program.
