Donations of 1,500 colorful baskets filled with candy, toys and good wishes were

delivered by area colleges Wednesday for children served by SCAN.

This is the 13th Annual Easter Basket Collection organized by the Northeast Indiana Alumni Directors Consortium (NIADC) for SCAN. Participants this year include: IPFW; University of Saint Francis; Huntington University; Ivy Tech Community College Northeast; Manchester College; Trine University; and Indiana Tech.

Starting in February, the colleges began collecting baskets and donations of items from students, faculty and the public.

Jennifer Boen, SCAN's spokeswoman, said there were 1,800 baskets donated last year, but the agency had a few colleges that didn't participate this year.

The baskets of books, stuffed animals and candy are given to children in SCAN's home-based prevention programs and to youngsters who come to SCAN each week for supervised visits with their parents in the Family Restoration program.

SCANS has been serving the area since 1974. It is a nonprofit with the mission to “eliminate the abuse and neglect of children through family services, education and community partnerships.”
