Hoosiers' can't overcome slow start

Friday, March 29, 2013 01:43 am
Indiana started slow, stay rattled and never really challenged in their 61-50 Sweet 16 loss to fourth-seed Syracuse Thursday night at Washington D.C.

Here are some of the keys to the defeat:Coach Jim Boeheim has said this is one of his best defensive teams and it proved it. Syracuse and 12 steals, 10 blocks and flustered the Hoosiers into a series of poor choice. IU scored a season-low 50 points, eight fewer than their previous low.Syracuse had spent most of the season struggling on offense, but you'd never know it by the way it scored against IU. It shot 46.7 percent in the first half and 43.8 percent for the game. Guard Michael Carter-Williams had a career-high 24 points.Indiana shot just 31.0 percent in the second half, and 33.3 percent for the game. They came in averaging 48.6 percent. They also were just 3-for-15 from three-point range. That's 20.0 percent, well below their season average of 40.8 percent. The Hoosiers had a flurry of turnovers to start the game and never really adjusted. They had 12 at halftime and a season-high-tying 19 for the game. Syracuse scored 13 points off those turnovers.IU got almost nothing offensively from guards Jordan Hulls and Yogi Ferrell, who combined for no points, four assists and six turnovers. Syracuse guards Michael Carter-Williams and Brandon Triche combined for 38 points.
