Homestead's Parker among select coaching group

Spartan coach honored by peers

Six Indiana high school girls basketball coaches were recognized for their outstanding performances this past season, including Homestead's Rod Parker.Parker was part of a select group named as Bob King Coaches of the Year by their peers in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Also being recognized were Michelle Harter of Warsaw, Shane Sumpter of Westfield, Tod Windlan of Hamilton Heights, Kurt Godlevske of Bedford North Lawrence and Pat McKee of Columbus North.

Parker joined Harter as honorees for District One.

The Spartans finished this season with a 21-4 record, and Parker's teams have gone 167-101 in 11 seasons with the Spartans.

He is a 1993 graduate of IPFW and Parker's teams are known for their up-tempo play. The Spartans have finished second in the state among Class 4A schools in scoring offense each of the past two seasons. In 2011-12, the Spartans averaged 68.67 points. In 2012-13, they averaged 67.12 points.

Before becoming the Homestead girls' coach, Parker was a Homestead boys' basketball assistant for six seasons.
