Letter to the editor: Stop city spending

Tuesday, April 2, 2013 - 12:01 am

Mayor Tom Henry and the City Council are relentless and determined to raise property taxes on Allen County residents. I knew when then-Gov. Mitch Daniels put a cap on them that Fort Wayne would find a way to get around it.

When a consumer has more debt than revenue, they don’t go to their employer and demand more salary. They find ways to decrease spending. Not the city. They find more ways to increase their spending: $1,400 solar stop signs, thousands spent on signs saying “Welcome to Fort Wayne,” paying for the mayor’s transportation, moving statues, paying for unnecessary trips for the mayor and countless other examples of the city government not being frugally responsible with taxpayer dollars that could be used to reduce debt.

All of you who are supporting this irresponsible proposal to burden homeowners with higher taxes so you don’t have to restrain your spending habits are a dereliction of your responsibilities to be a good public servant to the residents of this city and county.
