Fort Wayne Police were searching for two suspects in a boy's fatal shooting Wednesday afternoon in the 900 block of Hugh Street.
According to Fort Wayne Police Chief Rusty York, the shooting occurred at around 12:32 p.m. A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot in the back yard of a home.
Several calls were received about shots being fired in the area, along with a call about a person being shot. According to York, the boy still had a heartbeat when medics arrived on the scene but died shortly after that. York said witnesses reported the boy was chased by two suspects into the yard, then multiple shots were fired.
According to a release from the Fort Wayne Police Department, witnesses reported seeing multiple people fleeing the area. A canine unit assisted in the investigation and attempted a track, which ended nearby.
Detectives are speaking with witnesses, and technicians are processing the crime scene for evidence. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
York described the suspects as African-American men in their 20s. York said witnesses identified the shooter as wearing a dark-hooded sweatshirt. York told reporters that the shooting was potentially gang-related.
"I don't think I'm premature in saying we are dealing with gangs, drugs and guns," York said.
