Wednesday, April 3, 2013 - 1:35 am

A former longtime assistant under Hall of Fame IPFW coach Arnie Ball will become the newest volleyball head coach at a Division II college in North Carolina.

Lees-McRae announced Tuesday that it hired Dave Schmidlin to the head coach of its men's and women's volleyball teams.

Schmidlin has spent almost 20 years coaching college volleyball, including spending 10 years serving as IPFW's recruiting coordinator and strength coach. With Schmidlin on the coaching staff, the Mastodons won three conference championship and reached the NCAA Tournament twice in the 1990s.

Along with his coaching experience at IPFW, he was a women's volleyball coach at Saint Francis and Oakland University. The IPFW graduate most recently also was the head coach for the NAIA men's volleyball team Cardinal Stritch.

Lees-McRae is a member of the Conference Carolinas. The Conference Carolinas is Division II conference for women's volleyball but will become eligible for an automatic bid to the men's volleyball Division I-II NCAA Tournament starting next year.
