Scott, Beachem named to All-Star squad

Neither Bryson Scott nor V.J. Beachem got a chance with their respective high school programs to play for a state championship. But both will be able to represent not just their school but also their state as a capper to their prep careers.

Scott and Beachem were both named to the 2013 Indiana All-Star team on Tuesday by the Indianapolis Star, sponsor of the event.

The duo will join 2013 Indiana Mr. Basketball Zak Irvin of Hamilton Southeastern and 10 other players this summer for several showcase games around the state, followed by the annual two-game series with the Kentucky All-Stars.

“It is an honor to make the team and a blessing as well,” said Northrop's Scott. “After being on the North team in my junior year I really wanted to have a decent senior year and get on the team.”

Scott finished his senior season averaging 23.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He finished 4th in the voting for Indiana Mr. Basketball.

New Haven's Beachem, who was recently named 2013 News-Sentinel Player of the Year, was a member of the 2012 Junior All-Star core team. He will join future teammate Demetrius Jackson of Mishawaka Marian on this year's All-Star squad.

Both will be at Notre Dame next season.

“We have not played together much, so this will be nice,” Beachem said.

Beachem led New Haven to its first sectional championship since 1996 and its first-ever NHC championship while averaging 22.3 points per game.

Indiana has dominated the recent series with Kentucky, with nine straight wins overall. Neither Scott or Beachem want to be part of the team that sees that streak end.

“We want to keep that going,” Scott said.

Other members of the team include a pair of Indiana commitments in a pair of 6-foot-6 forwards Devin Davis (Warren Central) and Collin Hartman (Cathedral).

Another future Hoosier on the team is Darius Latham, a 6-5 forward for North Central. However, he will play on the gridiron for Indiana, recruited as a four-star defensive lineman.

Future teammate of Scott at Purdue, 6-7 forward Basil Smotherman of Lawrence North, was named to the team as well as Michael Schlotman of Munster (William & Mary).

Carmel guard Michael Volovic, who will walk-on at Butler, was named to the team along with Castle's Blake Simmons (Evansville), who averaged 23.5 points per game as a senior.

A pair of Tipton stars will suit up for Indiana in Clay Yeo (Valparaiso) and Mike Crawford (Saint Louis).
