A formal charge of murder has been filed in the death of a 17-year-old boy.
The charge was filed Thursday in Allen Superior Court. Deadrian C. Boykins, 18, is alleged to have shot Elijah Freeman around 12:30 p.m. on April 3, according to a probable-cause affidavit filed in the case by the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office.
Freeman, of Fort Wayne, was allegedly chased into the backyard of a home in the 900 block of Hugh Street before being shot. He died shortly after medics arrived, according to information released previously in the case.
The probable-cause affidavit says that a man eating a sandwich in his garage reportedly hear a popping sound, looked out of a window and heard another pop, and then saw a person wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt shooting at another person who was wearing a white T-shirt.
The person in the white T-shirt, later identified as Freeman, fell to the ground after the last shot, according to the affidavit, but got back up and began running again.
Freeman was followed by the person in the black sweatshirt, and the man said he heard several more gunshots, then saw the person in the sweatshirt run to the front of a home and meet up with another person. Those two individuals ran down Hugh Street, according to the affidavit.
Boykins was identified as the alleged shooter through the use of a photo array.
