Department of Natural Resources conservation officers are investigating the death of a woman with Alzheimer's whose body was found in a pond.

At around 10:50 a.m. Sunday the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department dispatch received a report that a person was found in a pond at a South Whitley residence in the 7500 block of W 500 S. Family members of 74-year-old Bonnie Knetter had searched for her near her home, according to a news release. Knetter had Alzheimer’s and when family members came to check on her in the morning, she was not inside her apartment, according to the news release.

After discovering she was not inside her apartment, her family began looking for her outside and found her body in the pond a few hundred feet from her residence, according to the release. She was pulled unresponsive from the water and pronounced dead by medics.

Assisting agencies include the South Whitley Police Department, Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police and Whitley County EMS. Knetter's death is under investigation and an autopsy will be conducted Monday to try and determine the cause of death.
