WEST LAFAYETTE — Police cordoned off streets and evacuated buildings near the main campus of Purdue University after a suspicious piece of PVC pipe was found.

Police say they received a report shortly after noon Wednesday that a suspicious item had been found on a sidewalk in the area near Sylvia and North Grant Streets. The Journal & Courier in Lafayette reports that a police robot detonated the pipe and that it was not an explosive.

Purdue University sent an alert to students and staff before police issued the all-clear, telling them to avoid the area because police were investigating a bomb threat.
