The organization's goal is to improve the outcome of pregnancy and reduce infant mortality by providing health education and case management to at-risk families.The culmination of the Indiana Chapter of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's 2013 Northeast Indiana Man and Woman of the Year campaign is the Grand Finale Gala. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Diamond Room at Ceruti's Summit Park, 6601 Innovation Blvd. The black tie-optional event includes silent and live auctions, heavy hors d'oeuvres, live entertainment and the announcement of this year's Man and Woman of the Year. Tickets are $50 and standing room only is available.Thursday is International Pay It Forward Day, focused on inspiring random acts of kindness. On Thursday, Fazoli's will hand out more than 100,000 vouchers nationwide for free pasta marinara. The goal is to encourage those getting the vouchers to pay it forward by making a donation to Feed The Children, a nonprofit hunger relief organization. Guests have until May 31 to redeem their voucher and make a donation.
In Fort Wayne, Fazoli's is at 439 Coliseum Blvd. W., 6525 Stellhorn Drive and 5909 Covington Road.The Special Cuisines class at Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast will serve an African dinner Thursday. Here are some of the foods that will be served: poached shrimp and celery appetizers; Senegalese peanut soup; roasted sweet potato salad; lamb and orange kebabs; and plantains sautéed in caramel sauce with toasted walnuts and vanilla ice cream.
Reservations are required, with seating between 5 and 6:30 p.m. Call the Special Cuisines line at least 24 hours in advance at 480-2002 to make a reservation. The dinners are served on Ivy Tech's Coliseum campus, 3800 N. Anthony Blvd., in the Hospitality Room. Enter door 24 on the north side of the building.Farmers markets are starting to open for the season, including the Historic Southside Farmers Market, which opened a few weeks ago. The market, which has been operating since 1926, is at 3300 Warsaw St. between Rudisill and Pontiac. It's open 7 a.m.-1 p.m. every Saturday through December.
