Man shot to death by Fort Wayne Police is identified

The Allen County coroner's office has identified a man who Fort Wayne Police shot to death after a chase Saturday afternoon.

An autopsy was performed Sunday afternoon and the man's identity was confirmed as Tavontae Jamar Haney, 19, of Fort Wayne.

According to police spokesman Jeremy Webb, police had tried to stop a red SUV in a routine traffic stop at the intersection of Congress Avenue and Gaywood Drive at around 3:50 p.m. Saturday. The two people inside the vehicle ran and were chased by police. The driver of the vehicle got away. The passenger ran through the neighborhood and at some point confronted police and was fatally shot, according to Webb. A firearm was found near Haney's body In the 4300 block of Spatz Avenue, according to Webb.

The coroner's office does not release how many times a victim was shot, but a news release from Webb states that more than one officer was involved, and they would be placed on administrative leave during the investigation, per department policy.

Haney’s death marks the 16th homicide ruling for Allen County in 2013.
