The Settlers' annual Herb and Perennials Plant Sale this Friday and Saturday will have a wide variety of herbs and plants. But you had better get to the Swinney Homestead early Friday if you want the best selection.

The sale usually attracts a large crowd, said Louise Larsen, a member who is helping to organize the sale. The historic Swinney home is located on West Jefferson Boulevard at the west edge of downtown beside Swinney Park.

Settlers members expect the sale to include several kinds of basil and sage, as well as herbs such as parsley, rosemary, thyme and oregano, Larsen said. They also will have perennials and geraniums.

A local grower raises the herbs for the sale, Larsen said.

“Last year, they were wonderful, so we are hoping they will be wonderful again,” she said.

Settlers members also will offer plants ranging from flowers to shrubs and young trees dug up from their own gardens and from gardens around the Swinney Homestead.

“Those are the real treasures,” Larsen said.

Sale hours will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.-noon Saturday.

Most plants will be displayed in the basement of the Swinney Homestead. Follow the signs to enter using the stairway at the back, northwest corner of the house. Because the plants will be indoors, the sale will go on rain or shine, said Larsen and Katie Bloom, Settlers president.

Proceeds from the plant sale helps the Settlers group maintain the Swinney house, which was built in 1844. The nonprofit group is dedicated to “preserving and teaching Victorian and Early American hand arts and history.”

People attending the plant sale also will be able to enjoy some down-home hospitality on Friday:

•Free herbal tea, fruit punch and cookies will be served during an open house at the Swinney home.

•The Hearthstone Ensemble, a Settlers music group, will perform early Americana music.

•You can pick up goodies to take home at a bake sale in the house.

•The Settlers' Gift Shoppe, which features hand-made decorative items and other gifts, will be open for shopping.

•Hand-arts items will be displayed.
