A man struck and killed by a train in New Haven has been identified.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office has identified him as Derek R. Sowers, 22, of Woodburn. Sowers was killed at 11:18 p.m. Friday near the 500 block of Broadway Street when he and at least two other people tried to get across the railroad tracks after hearing the whistle of an oncoming train, according to the New Haven Police Department. The witnesses stopped because they realized they couldn't cross in time, according to police. Lights and gates were working at the location, according to Officer Darren Peterson.

Sowers is the 12th traffic fatality in Allen County in 2013. This incident remains under investigation by the New Haven Police Department and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
