EVANSVILLE — Police in Evansville say a man's been arrested on preliminary attempted murder charges in a shooting that happened at a Walmart store.

Police say the wounded 30-year-old man suffered a gunshot to his lower back and was alert when he was taken to a hospital Sunday night. City police Sgt. Jason Cullum tells the Evansville Courier & Press that the man was shot while apparently trying to escape from men who had chased his car to the store on the city's east side.

Officers arrested the 24-year-old man early Monday at the nearby apartment of an ex-girlfriend.

Cullum says investigators believe three shots were fired and that it's fortunate no one else was injured.

The arrested man told officers the confrontation happened because the other man had robbed him.
