A victim who witnesses said wanted to get across railroad tracks ahead of an oncoming train was struck and killed Friday night.

The victim was walking with others after 11 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of Broadway to a gas station when the group heard a train whistle, according to a news release. The victim headed across the track and was struck while the others stopped running because of the speed of the approaching train. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fatality is being investigated by the New Haven Police Department.
