Fort Wayne residents accepted Mayor Tom Henry's challenge Monday morning as they took an alternative route to work, ditching the car and taking the roads by bike as part of national Bike to Work Month.

From free coffee to bragging rights, Fort Wayne Bike to Work Month is giving cyclists the opportunity to meet other local riders and take advantage of the local trails.

The monthlong initiative is also an opportunity for drivers to continuously become aware of the increase in cyclists on the road.

“If the weather is good, I would expect we could have hundreds of additional bicyclists on the streets going to and from work. I ask drivers to be responsive to an increased presence of bicycles that day and every time they drive,” Mayor Henry said in a statement. “We cannot forget that motorists and bicyclists share the road every day.”

Whether you are a new cyclist or an experience road warrior, don't miss out on the opportunity to win the Fort Wayne Bike Challenge. Log on to www.nationalbikechallenge.org and enter your zip code to get started. While the National Bike Challenge runs through September, the Fort Wayne Challenge will run just for the month of May and there is no cost to join.

So dust off the bike, grab your helmet and hit the road to celebrate national Bike to Work Month.
