Tom Crean praises Gordon's 'clutch' play

BLOOMINGTON – It's official: Evan Gordon is now an Indiana Hoosier – for one season.Gordon will enroll in graduate school at Indiana and be eligible immediately. With 1,186 career points in three years, mostly as a starter, he will provide a much-needed boost to a backcourt that returns only point guard Yogi Ferrell.

The 6-2, 195-pound Gordon has scored as many as 29 points, grabbed as many as eight rebounds and totaled as many as six assists and five steals. Last season he scored 28 points against USC. He played two years at Liberty University in Virginia and one year at Arizona State.

Gordon has 173 career three-pointers and has a career free throw percentage of 74.2.

“We are excited to have Evan Gordon join our program,” coach Tom Crean said in a university release. “Evan has been a productive and proven player throughout his college career. He can score. He makes his teammates better and he is a clutch player.

“Defensively his physical strength and speed have helped him be a strong individual and team defender. Evan will bring leadership, a work ethic and a seriousness that will help make our program better.”

Gordon will work toward a master's degree in athletic administration/sports management.

“He has done an outstanding job academically during his career,” Crean said, “and we expect he will do the same here.”

Gordon made instant impact at Liberty. He made the Big South All-Freshman team by averaging 12.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals. As a sophomore he averaged 14.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.6 season.

Last season at Arizona State he averaged 10.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals.

Gordon was a three-year starter at Indianapolis North Central High, and played on the Panthers 2007 state championship team. He also played a year at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia. He averaged 13.0 points and 6.0 assists for a team that went 27-2 and finished second in the National Prep Showcase finals.

Gordon's older brother, Eric, was an All-America during his one season at IU (2007-08). He set a Hoosier freshman record by averaging 20.9 points. He was the No. 7 draft pick the the Los Angeles Clippers. He now plays for New Orleans and has a five-year pro average of 18.0 points.
