About 60 men and women nearly beat the dawn to Fox Island Sunday for the Fox Island Triathlon. The event was a sprint triathlon; it began with a 500-meter swim, a 20-kilometer (more than 12 miles) bike race and a 5K (more than 3 miles) run.A few minutes after 7 a.m., the first of the competitors hit the water in Bowman Lake while water-rescue crews from the Fort Wayne Fire Department and the Southwest Allen County Fire District manned boats ready to help any swimmer who might encounter serious trouble.

At the same time, seven people competing in the duathlon — a 2.5K run, a 20K ride, then a 5K run — began their races.

The races were done by 9 a.m., although the list of finishers' times was unavailable Sunday afternoon.
