Longtime North Side teacher Ed King surprised with new car

Music instructor honored by community for 40 years of teaching

Saturday, May 25, 2013 - 6:29 am

Ed King II has been teaching music at North Side High School for 40 years. In those four decades he's seen a lot of faces, mentored many students and has made an impact in the lives of musicians around the country.

Many of those same students came back to North Side High School on Friday night as King's family, students and friends surprised him with a gift - a brand-new black Ford Mustang.

After the end-of-the-year student recital and a surprise alumni recital that included former students ranging in age from 20 to 50, King was honored with the car.

The gift was possible thanks to $20,000 raised by King's family and community donations.

After a 60-day online fundraising campaign, Mike King, Ed's son, said the last two weeks before the fundraising deadline was a very busy time.

As Ed first laid eyes on the car, it took a minute to sink in.

"He legitimately didn't think it was happening," Mike said.
