Tip of the Hat

Wednesday, June 12, 2013 - 12:01 am

Many, many thanks to the person who found my wallet in a cart out in the Southtown Walmart parking lot. I can't thank you enough. God bless you.

A tip of the hat to the organizers of the recent Memorial Day recognition for veterans, firefighters, police and first responders held at Parkview North Park. As a veteran, I was especially touched by a couple of young Girl Scouts who came up to me and asked “Were you in the Army, Mister?” When I replied in the affirmative, one of the little girls handed me a homemade card and the other handed me a box of Girl Scout cookies — both said “Thanks for your service.” As a veteran who served during the Vietnam era, there was often open hostility directed at servicemen and servicewomen, and I found it truly humbling that these young girls were so patriotic and caring. Thanks also to all of the folks who gave of their time and money to support this recognition day. We truly appreciated it.
