An Allen County man received 20 years in prison Monday for a sexual relationship that began when the victim was 13.Robert C. Carney, 41, was sentenced in Allen Superior Court this week on two counts of Class B felony sexual misconduct with a minor.

According to court documents the charges stem from a five-year relationship with minor who is now 18. Initially, Carney had 10 counts against him but under a plea agreement all but two of the charges were dropped.

According to court documents the misconduct had started in 2008, when Carney was living with the victim's mother in a New Haven apartment complex. In 2012 the girl's mother cam home and discovered them having sex. At first the girl told her mother that it had only happened a couple of times after she turned 18, but she eventually told her biological father it had been going on since she was 13. Her father then contacted her mother and the girl eventually told her mother the whole story, which is when the police got involved.

Carney was given 15 years on each charge with 5 years suspended on each count. The sentences are to run consecutively to each other with five years of probation once he is released.
