Man 'critical,' girl 'serious' after afternoon shootings

Wednesday, July 3, 2013 - 9:59 am

A man was in critical condition and a 15-year-old was in serious but stable condition after they were shot Tuesday afternoon.

James E. Starts III, 19, and Lashire M. Collins, 15, both of Fort Wayne, were found about 5 p.m. when the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 4400 block of Smith Street after a report of a shooting. Officers found the two victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, according to police spokesman Officer Jason Anthony.

Paramedics arrived on scene and took the victims to a local hospital.

Initial reports indicate the victims were standing in the front yard of a residence at the intersection of Smith and Senate Avenue when the shooting occurred. Witnesses reported the suspect fired several gunshots while standing on Senate Avenue west of the intersection. The shooter was last seen running southbound in the alley west of Smith.

No arrests had been made and there were no suspects as of Tuesday afternoon.

This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne police and the Allen County prosecutor's office.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department and Three Rivers Ambulance Authority assisted.
